A clear roadmap from your
first lesson to your driving licence.
Learning to drive is a big step – and MA Driving is here to guide you through it. This step-by-step guide explains everything from applying for your provisional licence to passing your practical test, making the process clear, manageable, and tailored to your journey as a new driver.
Before you can start learning, you'll need a provisional driving licence. You can apply online at gov.uk. You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old, and you can start lessons once you turn 17.
Once your licence arrives, contact MA Driving to arrange your first lesson. You can learn at your own pace with weekly sessions or choose a more intensive approach. Lessons are tailored to your experience and confidence.
You must pass your theory test before booking the practical exam. The test includes multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception section. Book your test online at gov.uk – your instructor can help you prepare.
When you're nearing test standard, your instructor will let you know it's time to book the practical test. This is done through the DVSA website and often comes with an 8–10 week wait, so planning ahead is important.
To help you prepare, MA Driving offers realistic mock tests. These simulate the real driving test experience and highlight any areas that need attention before the big day.
On test day, your instructor will take you to the test centre and let you use the tuition vehicle. The test lasts around 40–45 minutes and is conducted by a DVSA examiner. You'll receive your result straight after.
Once you've passed, consider additional training like the Pass Plus course or refresher lessons. These help you build confidence on motorways, in poor weather, and in unfamiliar areas – skills that last a lifetime.
